Labservatism

Election fever is here and we've seen messages from the Tories ridiculed and we've seen some clever maneuvering from the Labour Party. And on the front pages last week we saw the Tories turning to their old buddies Saatchi's.

But where have the Lib Dems been all this time? Well cooking up this original campaign with Iris it seems.

Some angry advertising people out there!

Whoever set this up is angry! And, there are times, in the past, when I would have written my bit because advertising isn't unionised - we don't conform to rules on working hours or pensions - so sometimes ad agencies take the piss. But don't worry I am sweetness and light these days!

The best ideas are never yours. Or if they are, not for long.

Ever since I started in advertising in my little college in Cornwall, I have believed that I am being bugged. I don't know where they hide these little microphones. All I know is that ideas I have some how end up in other people's hands for different brands.

Last week there was a little banner I noticed for a mobile phone with the strapline 'see beauty in the detail'. The image was a kaleidoscope of the parts of the phone. I almost fell off my chair as we had tried to sell that stapline and visual (unsuccessfully) to BlackBerry years ago. Today we have Marmite. I am a big fan of the Marmite campaign. You either love it or you hate it is so true! (Personally I love it) Now they have this clever and relevant campaign where they have set up political parties for hater and lovers. Here, take a look:

The only thing that gets my goat is that my Creative partner and I had the exact same idea for a Cottage Cheese brand two years ago. There was no money of course, it was an unrecognizable brand and even when we came up with it we thought - if only we were advertising Marmite. In the end we had a poster in Tesco magazine and a TV ad which only ran on the screens at the Good Food Show in Birmingham.

Wanna see? No? Here it is anyway...if I find the video file I'll post that too:

Kylie saved me.

Enough! The blogging drought has come to an end. Welcome back readers (if any of you are still there). I did some quick scouting for things to write about and came across this blog post on Brand Republic by Jeremy Lee.

http://community.brandrepublic.com/blogs/jeremyleeonmedia/archive/2010/03/29/robbie-williams-saved-geri-halliwell-jane-austen-saved-emma-thompson-and-danny-dyer-saved-me.aspx

Apparently Robbie Williams saved Geri Halliwell and the writer for some reason states that Danny Dyer saved him. His reasons for claiming this seem a little flimsy to me and I wouldn't say this is a great piece of blogging but the topic is interesting.

Celebrities can and do have a positive impact on the way people live their lives. The media is always full of stories of celebrities setting us bad examples. Lindsey Lohan enourages to wear no pants and get shit-faced. Jordan promotes careers to young girls who now see glamour modelling as a better career than being a doctor, and we all must be a size 0 like Nicole Richie. But not many articles look at the positive effects.

When I was growing up I was short. My Mum was even shorter and got hugely angry whenever someone mentioned it - Oh Susan can sit in the middle because she's so small - Mum would seethe and then come home and moan to me. I learnt that being small was something to be ashamed of. That was until I found Kylie. Kylie is pint sized, she's also sexy - those gold hot-pants rocked everyone's world. I wanted to be like her and I was! I was small so was she - it made men want to look after her - it made women want to be her friend. The next time someone said something about my height 'Oh you're so small' I replied 'yeh like Kylie'. God it was good. So Kylie saved me in a way.

Salsa salsa! With a dangerous fan.

Salsa comes to salsa in this lovely ad with beautiful animation for Tostitos Restaurant Style Salsa. What do you think? I think it's super cute!

A honda-cogs type music video

This music video is truly amazing. I wonder how many takes it took to get all this working - or whether they had to piece material together. Just a work of genius from the people who set it up. Clap clap for the technicians. You rock!

Directed by James Frost, OK Go and Syyn Labs. Produced by Shirley Moyers. The official video for the recorded version of "This Too Shall Pass" off of the album "Of the Blue Colour of the Sky". The video was filmed in a two story warehouse, in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, CA. The "machine" was designed and built by the band, along with members of Synn Labs ( http://syynlabs.com/ ) over the course of several months.
